HOUSEBOAT GENERAL AND OPERATIONAL INFORMATION
NO DRINKING AND DRIVING, OR EXCESSIVE NOISE
The skipper of the boat is not allowed to drink while operating the boat. Disregarding this rule could result in fines payable by the skipper. Loud or excessive noise, especially at night is also against the law and could result in a fine.
“Cob Hole” and “Mansfield Game Reserve” are two popular places to overnight. For security reasons we suggest that you do not anchor near the side of the river where burglars could wade to the boat. Should you however prefer to overnight near land, your boat can be tied to its jetty where you can spend the night in the harbour.
TRAVELLING AFTER DARK
The houseboat is not equipped for night cruising and may not travel after sunset. Ensure that you are safely anchored prior to nightfall. Cruising may continue at sunrise.
SPEED AND EMERGENCIES
The houseboat is to be driven at low speed at all times. In doing so you will ensure better control over the performance of the boat. The houseboat has to be put into neutral long before you want to bring the boat to stop to allow the speed to bleed off. Kindly inform us at least 30 minutes before you return to the harbour in order to ensure assistance when mooring the boat.
Please contact us directly should you experience any of the following problems
While making every effort to ensure the boat is in good running order, mechanical breakdowns do occur.
In the event of hitting a sand bank, please turn off and tilt the motor. Should you be able to push the boat into in to deeper water, you will be able to continue your journey. If you are unable to get the boat off the sandbank, sit back, relax and wait for the high tide.
PLEASE NOTE: Attempting to drive the boat off the sand bank will result in mud being sucked into the cooling intakes and the motor will overheat. Attempting to drive over the sandbank and mud may damage your propeller and cause additional problems and charges.
BATTERIES & ELECTRICITY USAGE
There is a starter battery on the boat which only supplies the motor. There are also 2 solar charged house batteries which feed the cabin lights, fridge, radio and water pumps. To ensure sufficient power to the cabin lights after dark, please take note of the following:
- Electricity usage is to be limited to fridge and radio during daylight hours. The radio draws substantial electricity at high speaker volume.
- Long showers will result in the pumps using precious electricity reserved for cabin lights.
- Cabin lights are only to be switched on after sunset.
- Under no circumstances are any foreign objects/ appliances to be connected to the batteries. A USB charger connection is supplied to charge mobile phones. Please supply your own charger cable for your phone.
The stove and geyser are connected to a gas cylinder. Please note that the geyser knobs are preset and should not be tampered with. Should you experience a strong gas smell in the cabin, please close off the gas cylinder tap located boxed in below the steering wheel. Also note that the gas supply to the geyser is to be switched off at night after usage to avoid the pilot light failing and gas filling the cabin.
The main cabin is made up for your convenience, and includes a double bed for adults and a cushioned couch for a child, if required. The second “bedroom” is located in the kitchen, where the dining table top is lowered onto the seating benches and cushions are used as a mattress. Spare bedding and blankets are located in the bunks in the kitchen. Kindly refrain from taking the mattresses and bedding outside to avoid damage or loss.
PORTA POTTI (TOILET)
Add some blue water into the bowl by pressing on the pump before using (top round knob).
After use, open the valve blade by pulling out the valve handle (front bottom). Flush by pressing on the pump then close the valve blade.
ANCHORING YOUR BOAT
When anchoring the boat, please ensure that he anchor rope is fully out, holding the boat and that you are not free drifting.
Please be aware that storms may occur during the night and that it is imperative that your anchor is fully secured.
Ensure that the anchor light is on while anchored.
NO BOAT MAY BEACH ON THE BANKS OF THE KOWIE RIVER
The boat has an outboard motor controlled by a steering system, throttle and choke. The motor is started by turning the key. In cold conditions and after approximately 6 hours of non-usage, they choke may need to be used.
The cooling water needs to be checked continuously. The engine alarm will sound if the engine is overheating. Switch off immediately and phone us.
In the event that the motor won’t start, please check the following:
- Is the petrol tank connected
- Has the bulb been primed
- Is the throttle in the neutral position
- Lift the choke lever and turn the key. You may try this up to three times. Exceeding this may cause the motor to flood
- In the event that the motor is flooded, you will smell fuel. Kindly wait or 10 minutes for the fuel to evaporate from the carburetor before trying again.
